Hot hot and more hot!

It’s pretty hot here in Adelaide at the moment. Yesterday it peaked at about 43 Degrees and today it is about 45 Degrees. The weather man says it’s going to carry on into the weekend with no break from the heat. Thats right over 40 degrees for the next 4 days… :(

Unfortunately the airconditioner in my house died about 2 weeks ago and is only being replaced next week. I have a small portable aircon that is just keeping my room cool and my parents have a reverse cycle airconditioner in their bedroom. So at the moment we are all living in our bedrooms.

I’m sitting underneath the airconditioner in my offices and I’m still roasting. We just have shitty aircons in the building. No amount of moaning and complaining to management seems to help. Funny enough the managers offices are nice and cool from the large ducted airconditioners, which don’t seem to cool the engineering area. Right now I’m actually feeling ill due to the heat.

Well less than 3 weeks until I change jobs. So my new offices have good Airconditioning and are clean, unlike my current job. I’ve had all of my daily duties taken away from me, so I’m basically sitting around doing very little waiting for some server approvals, so I can deploy some new systems before I leave. I may end up doing nothing for the next 3 weeks.

Upgrade the Firmware on a TV?!?!

I have a Samsung 26″ HD LCD TV I bought about 3 months ago.

For some odd reason I started getting this tearing effect. Basically imagine that the screen is divided half horizontally. The top half of the screen plays a dvd / Blu Rayor the Wii perfectly, but the bottom half starts to lag behind and shows image ghosting. After about 2 mins the bottom half becomes completely illegible.

Turns out there is a handy firmware update to fix the problem from Samsung’s website. It’s just so funny being able to upgrade the firmware on your TV using a USB flash drive.

Windows 7 Beta on KVM and Ubuntu Intrepid

I thought I’d give Windows 7 Beta a try, so I fired up KVM (Kernel Virtual Machine) under Ubuntu Intrepid and to my surprise it actually worked.

Here’s some screen shots (click on the images to enlarge them).

Back to work and a recap on my holidays

I went back to work today and surprisingly it was pretty easy going. Probably because I was smart and took yesterday off, cleverly avoiding Monday blues and back to work itis. Looking at my list of tickets however, I cringe at the sheer volume (or is it mass?) of stuff to do. Today was mainly spent reading mail and cleaning up the nasty hacks I had in place prior to going on leave. But never fear, I will save the day :p

So a recap of my holidays. I went on leave the 19th December and I tell you what, the 4 days before my holidays felt like they took a month to pass. During my last week before I went off, we lost a drive on a server, so I hacked something together that would last use through christmas. When the 19th finally arrived I was just so happy to get a break from the grind. The days before Christmas were spent shopping for Christmas toys and generally being lazy. The weekend before Christmas a good mate of myself and my brother came around and we had a mini lan, which was great. I hadn’t seen him for a while as he was studying hard at Uni. The weekend was spent playing Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 (which is so addictive multiplater coop), Red Alert 3, Left 4 Dead and some TF2 (which I love). So that weekend I didn’t sleep all that much.
After that I went out with my lady friend a couple times to watch movies and just relax.

On the 23rd December my dad organised to go out to celebrate the fact that myself, my mom and my brother had offically been in Australia for 2 years. I still can’t believe it myself :p

We went out to the first restaurant we visited after arriving in Adelaide. It’s called “The Greek”. As you can gather from the name, it’s a Greek Restaurant :p
Quite symbolic, really. First restaurant we ever visited and we had our 2 year aniversary of arriving there :)
We caught a taxi there so we wouldn’t have to drive. The evening was really nice, I had the lamb shank and it was awesome. I even have a picture…

After having a nice meal we wandered up to Victoria Square and had a look at the Christmas Tree (see my Victoria Square post earlier). After that we caught a taxi home.

On Christmas Eve the family went out to one of our favourite restaurants. The Earl of Leicester. It’s a great place.
We arrived there about 8 ish and had an awesome meal. I had a steak which was just amazing. My brother and dad had the Duck in Orange Sauce (one of our favorites) and that was lovely. My mom had the atlantic salmon, cooked to perfection.
After having a really  nice meal, we went down to the bar and had a couple of drinks. Okay maybe more than a couple. Got home that evening ready to sleep for Christmas day.

Christmas day arrived! I got some really nice presents. A Korg Guitar tuner, which I am so happy with. It’s an awesome tool. Next was a pool game for the Wii which is also very cool. Thirdly I got a electric car buffer / polisher. I also got a really, really nice book about the Universe. It’s really heavy and thick. Full of pictures and heaps of cool information.
We had a small breakfast on Christmas morning in preparation for the massive lunch / dinner my mom was making. Christmas lunch was great. Roast lamb, turkey, pork all the trimmings. A proper christmas meal :)
After that we went down and played with one of my dads new toys. He got a air compressor for christmas. My bro and I put it too the test by cleaning out our PCs. Yes we were cleaning PCs on christmas day lol. Worked very well though.

Boxing day started reasonably early. My parents had been invited out by my dads best friend for a boxing day motor bike ride. They left early before my brother and I woke up, so we were left to our own devices. After packing up the car with food, bedding and computers we headed down to Port Elliot. It’s about an hours drive south of Adelaide. A good mate of mine had a beachhouse his dad had rented, so we joined him down there. Man it was a great place. About 2 mins walk to a great beach. We took our PCs down and Lanned during the heat of the day and then went to the beach when it was cooler.
I ended up swimming in the sea and climbing up rocks to get a view of the whole bay. It was lovely. My mates dad is also a chef so we got treated to some amazing food. All in all a good way to spend a couple days after christmas. We came back around about lunchtime on the 28th, cause it was my moms birthday.

On the 29th I went out on a date with my girlfriend. We had a really great evening and I asked her out. She said yes, so I am a very happy man. She really is a great person. I’m so lucky to have met someone like her :)
Basically the couple of days after that were spent being lazy and going around to my girlfriends house to watch movies and relax.

All in all, looking back on my holiday is was really amazing.
