Leave, Glorious Leave!

As the title suggests, I’m taking some leave. Oh boy do I need it. I
have been a busy boy and all I need is a break from the grind.
Especially after looking at my capacity graphs today and realising the
I’m probably going to be building more servers soon… it never ends.

I’ve
of the 3rd and 4th July off. The 3rd I’m going to watch the first
showing of Hancock. Was a complete mistake. I some how bought tickets
online for a Thursday show at 3pm. What was I smoking? I don’t know but
it must have been pretty good.

In October I’m taking a week off to watch the Motogp in Phillip Island :)

Dell
Australia. What can I say. They were pretty touched at one point.
Online store required a login that you could never get hold of, and
they were a hell of a lot more expensive than Dell US which was silly.
Well I got a call from my Account Manager at Dell and I am really
impressed with their site. It’s a big improvement, plus the prices are
inline with the US. About bloody time. When the time comes around for
an upgrade, their gaming systems look pretty nice, and well priced.

Right, It’s late and I’m off to bed.

Well, lots of shiny newness (is that a word?) for me at the moment.
I’ve just installed Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy. Been running Gutsy for a while, in fact it is the longest surviving Linux Distro on my box :)
Before that it was Mandrivia 2007 on my laptop.

I have really become a Ubuntu fan boy of late. For a proper Linux Desktop you can’t go wrong. Each time I’ve tried to beat Fedora into submission I have failed. I seem to get hung up on ALSA. Skype and Wine / Crossover Games just don’t play well on Fedora. They all play along happily on Ubuntu. Go Figure.

Fedora 9 with KDE 4 was pretty, but buggy as hell. So that didn’t survive all that long.

Today Firefox 3 was released, and as I type this I’m using it, courtesy of the Ubuntu repos :)

I’ve reactivated my Cedega subscription…. <shock>!
There seems to be some good progress happening at Transgaming, and I just wanted to try the Shader Model 3 goodies. So I hope they won’t let me down.

A very sad day

I got an SMS at about 3:30 in the morning from my best friend in South Africa.
His wife suffered a miscarriage and they lost their baby. I feel pretty sad about this.
I tried to phone him up but couldn’t get through.

My internet connection, along with many other people in South Australia, was screwed. So skype calls were out of the question. I couldn’t get a call out on my mobile either, skype or gsm.

I feel pretty helpless, being so far away… :(

Firstly a list of things that are causing me pain at the moment….
1.) Work
2.) Work
3.) Work
4.) Centos (related to work)
5.) Fedora 8 (why did they throw the core away?)
6.) Colds and sickness.

Currently I’ve got some bad ass cold that is knocking me flat on my back (or ass, if you prefer profanity, using ass twice in a sentence is bad english). I’ve got tablets and nasal spray for it. However, they contain Codiene instead of Pseudoephedrine
Pseudo ephedrine is found in most head aches tablets, nasal sprays, cough mixtures, pretty much any pain medicine.
However, some very charming people here in Aus buy the cough medicine etc and refine the Pseudo ephedrine into…. <drum roll> …. the drug known as Ice. How thoughtful of them.
So, to buy cough medicine you need to produce an ID, but you could purchase elephant tranquilizer without an ID. LoL isn’t it.

So back to the tables I have. Codiene , According to Wiki is regulated drug.
You can be arrested in Hong Kong for using it outside research purposes…blah blah blah.
How about the side affects? :

* Common adverse drug reactions associated with the use of codeine include euphoria, itching, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, dry mouth, miosis, orthostatic hypotension, urinary retention and constipation
I can vouch for the euphoria part. I could get hit by a bus right now and not care :)

* Another side effect commonly noticed is the lack of sexual drive and increased complications in erectile dysfunction.
Holy crap!

So, I’m taking two tablets every four hours = 16mg Codiene in Total every four hours. A box of 48 tablets costs about $5.
I might start taking these after I get better… hehe (obviously kidding).

Anyway work is grinding me into the ground at the moment. Just far to much crap happening. But I’ll do my best.

Well, I’m getting tired now… so off to bed… peace my brothers…. thats the Codiene talking WEEEEEE.
