Yep. I’m back and better than ever. Been in the process of moving my sites off Dreamhost recently. My main reasons for leaving are mainly down to the reliablility and security of the Dreamhost servers. If you read the status blog, they seem to have a server failure everyday. Failure in the sense of a hardware problem. They must be running some pretty old boxes. On top of that, a guy I know who hosts with them, had his site hacked three times. It’s pagerank 5, so it attracts spammers like magnets.
I searched around the internet and trawled the web hosting forums for suggestions. There is no shortage of “cheap” web hosting companies. I even toyed with the idea of getting a VPS or a dedicated server. A dedicated server would be over kill for my sites, they are pretty small. However, I would like to host some mirrors, get a game server up, things like that. I play online games with my mate in the UK regulary, but direct connect through ADSL gives about 400ms of latency, which is no good for shooters. A cheap US dedicated server with the game server on their would give us both about 150ms, which is a bit better.
But for the moment, I’ve got a cheap hosting account from Godaddy.
I’ve had no issues with them after being with them for a month. Dreamhost gives ssh access to the webserver, Godaddy doesn’t (good and bad thing). But the Godaddy web panel is really REALLY good. I haven’t for once thought “I need ssh access damnit!”. So here we are.
Other than that, I’ve been to watch Ironman twice. Mainly with my brother and with friends. I really enjoyed the movie, great special effects, good story, sticks with the comic pretty well. I love when the general looks at the spare Ironman suit and says “I’ll be back for you later”. At the point I went “OMG, Warmachine!”
Very nice touch.
Other than that, working my ass off at work. I think we are reaching a critical mass, where
“lots of work” > “few people” x “working ass off”. I’m rolling out 10 servers and 4 new workstations this month. 2 of the servers are in the US, and 8 in the UK. So the whole of next week, I’m swatting away getting that done. After that I’m taking a holiday or something, sheesh.
