Christmas and all that

No Gravatar

Well Christmas is over and I must admit it was a good one for me.
Lots of good food and great company.
I got a telescope for Christmas. I’ve always wanted on and my family decided to get me one.
I’ve only dabbled into the Astonomy world so far, but it’s very interesting. I’m waiting for the full moon to come out, be great to test out the telescope.

Today it was 39 degrees…. yikes. It was rather warm. Spent most of the day in West Lakes shopping centre. It was lovely and cool in there, but even the centre air conditioners were battling. At 4:30pm it was still 38 Degrees. The weather report says it will be 41 on Monday. :(

I went into Dick Smiths and got hold of a copy of CivCity Rome. Paid $30 for it, marked down from $69.95. It’s a really fun game. It’s a mix of Caesers 3 and Stronghold, two of my all time favourite strategy games. So thats going to keep me busy for a while.

Still on holiday until the 6th Jan, so I’ve got some time to relax and get ready for crunch time at work. Not going to worry about it for now.

My enrollment in Tafe came through, so I’m hoping they give me lots of credit for my current Diploma and I only have to do a couple subjects to get another diploma. Going to either do Multimedia or Programming Diploma.

Well, thats enough of my displaced ramblings for now :)

Bad drivers suck

Yesterday, myself and the family were driving around in our Camry, and got rear ended by another car.
We were sitting still at the traffic lights and a guy drove into the back of our car at about 60 km/h.
It was pretty violent. The Camry got pushed about 3 metres forward. It held up well though.
The family is ok. All had aches and pains for a bit, but we are okay.
My brain is a bit rattled though. Battled to concentrate at work today.

Gears of War!

This weekend I got hold of a copy of Gears of War.
After taking about 20 mins to install (grr), I received a screen stating I should install a patch for the game to prevent a save game failure, something to that effect.
You have to get the Genuine Advantage stuff going on the Microsoft site, which refused to install in IE for some reason. Eventually got it working, got the patch and installed it.
I’ve been playing to Coop with my brother, which I have to say is a lot of fun. It’s great sharing the experience of the awesome graphics and good gameplay. I forgive Epic for taking so long to get UT3 out. GOW rocks!

The perl stuff I was working on at work is going well. I got the app written to read the data from the rrd database.
It’s pretty easy once you get all the perl modules working. I then went through a OOP perl tutorial, so now the code is written in OOP with objects. I’ve learned a hell of a lot about perl in the last couple days.

I’m going to start looking a 2d and 3d graphics programming under linux and windows. I think it will be quite interesting to play around with. On of the things I would really like to do is work on porting windows apps to linux. Bit like icculus I guess. See icculus.org

Oh, I also finished Half-Life 2 EP 2 this weekend. All I can say is, I really enjoyed it!
:)

Thats all for now….

Back into the programming world.

For too long have I sat idle as a Sys Admin, stuck in the ways of GFS and DRBD!

I’ve been given a job to do at work, that requires I blow the dust off the perl skills and use them.
I’ve forgotten a lot unfortunately, I had to cast my mind back and remember all the Object Oriented Terminology I learned way back when.
I’m a C / C++ programmer, so perl should be second nature right? Perl is based on C / C++?

Well, it’s not the same as C++. There are similarities, but perl does most things completely differently. And it does it in a better way I think.

So, I’ve got cacti, the great system graphing tool, with a whole load of data in it. Things such as load on servers, cpu usage etc.
I’m going to write a perl based tool that will pull the data stored by cacti in the rrd databases, and generate some useful information.
I looked at using a plugin for cacti called ReportIT. Seemed promising, but after an hour of just trying to patch Cacti to add plugin support, I gave up.
So I’ll let you know how it goes. There are loads of handy modules on CPAN to access rrd databases, so it should not be too difficult.

You’ll notice the “ScribeFire” thing at the bottom of the post. It’s a Firefox addon I found. Allows me to blog from my brower. Saves a lot of time.

My cat does some really odd things, but this was so cute I had to share it.
My mouse cursor caught his eye and well, the video explains it all :p
